New Acura NSX to be Developed in the U.S.

Acura today announced at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit that the all-new Acura NSX supercar will be developed and manufactured in the U.S. Honda Motor Co., Ltd. President and CEO Takanobu Ito unveiled a concept version of the Acura NSX and announced that it will be built in Ohio.

Honda plans to produce the new supercar at a unique, advanced manufacturing operation near its current auto production operations in central Ohio. The original Acura NSX was built at Honda plants in Japan from 1990 to 2005.
The new NSX will employ a lightweight chassis, a mid-mounted V-6 engine and Acura's innovative new Sport Hybrid SH-AWD (Super Handling All Wheel Drive) system. Ito said the new supercar will come to market within three years.
"Honda associates are up to the challenge of producing the new NSX for global customers with a high degree of craftsmanship," said Hidenobu Iwata, head of Honda's North American manufacturing operations and president of Honda of America Mfg., Inc. "Honda associates in Ohio have been building high-quality Honda and Acura vehicles for nearly 30 years, so this news in many ways is a culmination of their determined efforts."
"We have a rich history of creating innovative new products for our customers in the U.S. and in markets around the world," said Hiroshi Takemura, president of Honda R&D Americas, Inc. "The responsibility to develop the all-new Acura NSX demonstrates the maturity of our organization, the know-how of our associates and their ability to create an advanced and innovative supercar." Honda's U.S. R&D operations have developed 24 new models and are responsible for six vehicles in the company's current U.S. product portfolio -- the Honda Odyssey minivan, Pilot SUV, Ridgeline pickup, and the Acura TL, MDX and ZDX luxury-performance automobiles. A team from HRA Ohio Center will lead the continued design and development of the new NSX.

The legendary Acura NSX supercar is making its return! Robert Downey Jr. was spied behind the wheel of a new, Acura-badged supercar on set of the new Avengers movie in Central Park, previewing a successor to the beloved NSX.
Acura is Honda's U.S.-only luxury brand and the appearance of a long-awaited concept of the NSX is significant of Honda's return to the supercar market. Honda CEO Takanobu Ito had hinted at the NSX's revival when he said, "We're making progress with plans for an exotic sports car," and added six months ago that Honda wanted to re-launch a high-performance sports car like the NSX.
A source from Honda said, "Honda wants to build a supercar that breaks the mould while creating a new technological package." The source also noted that the Dual Note 4WD hybrid concept from the 2001 Tokyo Motor Show was a first look at the technology to be used in the new NSX ? a 3.5-litre V6 to drive the rear wheels and in-wheel electric motors for the front, generating over 400bhp.
Honda is currently in the works on a light, aluminum-bodied vehicle with a VTEC V6 engine between 3.5 to 3.7 liters. Additionally, there will be a twin electric motor set-up to be powered by lithium-ion batteries and a plug-in recharge system for a small, electric-only range, resulting in both copious torque and the famous revving power Hondas are known for.
The car is set to go on sale by 2014 with a price starting at £65,000 (approximately $100,000).
