Here’s What You Need to Know to Get Your Car Ready for Winter

October is Car Care Month!

Car Care Month is the perfect time to start taking steps to prepare your vehicle for the cold winter months that are on the way.

The cold weather brings specific hazards that you’ll need to watch out for and the best way to do so is to make sure your car’s ready!

Here’s what you should be thinking about during this Car Care Month.

Wiper blades
If your wiper blades are leaving your windows streaky and less-than-clean, it’s time to replace them.

They’re only meant to last for 6 to 12 months, so changing them during October is a great way to remember when they need a swap.

As the snow and slush fly, you need to have a clean windshield with every swipe!

Tires
Make sure your tires are wearing evenly and that your tire pressure is correct.

You can check the tread depth with a quarter! Put the quarter between two treads, head down. If you can see the top of George Washington’s head, it’s time for new tires.

As for tire pressure, you should consult your owner’s manual for the correct psi. It is also sometimes labeled on the inside of the driver’s side door of your vehicle.

Battery
Cold weather can affect your battery, just as much as it takes a toll on other parts of your car.

If you notice that your car is slow to turn over when you try to start it, you’ll need to get the battery checked out.

It’s not a bad idea to get it inspected for dirt, debris, and corrosion even if you don’t notice any symptoms of trouble.

Fluids
There are a lot of fluids in your vehicle.

They need to be at the proper levels and changed routinely in order to keep your car running at optimum levels.

Think oil, coolant, and windshield washer fluid!

It’s also important that you keep your gas tank full in the cold temps!

Make October Your Month for Regular Maintenance
At least once a year, you should have your wiper blades, fluids, tires, and battery inspected to make sure they’re in good shape.

Designating October as your month to take care of these issues each year will make it easy for you to remember!
